Favorite Science Fiction/Fantasy Authors

My favorite author is Jack Vance. Known for over 50 years for his dry humor and unique style of writing, this elderly Oakland writer has a well-established and enthusiastic cadre of fans and collectors, and has inspired several websites.
The Jack Vance Information page is probably the largest, and includes a BBS, and many great links.
The Vance Phile is the primary fan-e-zine, and well worth checking out for the reviews and resources.
The Jack Vance Archive is another good source, hosted in the Netherlands.

C. J. Cherryh is a favorite of both Mary's and mine. She writes with a very real grasp of human interaction and social politics, and is known for her inventive interlinked "universes". She maintains her own website, and keeps it very current with information on upcoming novels, her reading list, convention schedule, etc.

C J Cherryh's Place is her self-maintained site with very current news and links.

Writers of the Future: C.J. Cherryh is sponsored by the Internet Bookshop.

Iain M. Banks is a Scottish SF writer known for his 'Culture' novels, and the most inventive spaceship names in any known universe. He writes excellent mainstream fiction as Iain Banks.

Writers of the Future: Iain Banks is sponsored by The Internet Bookshop.

Culture Shock is an unofficial Banks resource site.

The Usenet group called alt.books.iain-banks is well worth checking out.

Lois Bujold is the creator of the Miles Vorkosigan series, with a "huntchbacked midget" of an anti-hero who is quite funny. She also writes interesting fantasy novels.

An unofficial site has FAQ's and lots of links.

The Baen Books site has material from her latest book and other series information.

Other favorite authors include SF writer Walter Jon Williams, who has his own "retro" page and a Fan Page.

Emma Bull does both SF and fantasy and plays music, too!

Charles de Lint is another folk musician who writes wonderful Celtic/Canadian fantasy books and has several alternate fan pages besides his own.

Bruce Sterling is well-known for his up-front online presence and thoughtful science fiction books like Schismatrix.

Melissa Scott writes some very interesting and different SF books.

No discussion of our favorite authors is complete without reference to Georgette Heyer. She had a magnificant command of dialog and humor, and her Regency novels are well worth reading - trust us!
